Gouda Honeycrisp Apple Bacon Grilled Cheese

This Gouda Honeycrisp Apple Bacon Grilled Cheese sandwiches crisp cooked bacon, sliced Honeycrisp apple, and mellow gouda cheese between buttered bread slices cooked to a golden brown. The sandwich balances the smoky, savory bacon with the juicy, tart-sweet apple and the creamy melted cheese, all held together in a crisp, buttery crust. It makes for a distinctively flavorful and texturally varied meal suitable for lunch or a casual dinner.

Description

The recipe starts by cooking bacon until crisp, either pan-fried or oven-baked for convenience. On slices of sourdough or preferred bread, slices of gouda cheese are layered with peeled, thinly sliced Honeycrisp apple—a variety known for its balance of sweetness and tartness—and topped with the crispy bacon. Optionally, honey or fig jam can be drizzled over the apples to add a touch of sweetness.

The bread is buttered on both sides before cooking the sandwich on medium-low heat to slowly melt the cheese without burning the bread. This results in golden, lightly crisped bread exterior with a gooey, flavorful interior combining smoky bacon, tangy apple, and smooth gouda.

The sandwich is cut in half and served immediately to preserve the melted cheese and crisp texture, making it a satisfying and comforting dish with a blend of savory, sweet, and fruity elements.

  2. Place 1 gouda cheese slice on bread. Top with apple slices. May drizzle with honey or fig jam, if so desired. Top with another slice of gouda cheese. Top with crispy bacon.

  4. Cook on medium-low heat (or even low) until lightly golden brown on each side and the cheese is melted.
  5. Cut in half and eat immediately.
