Gouda Honeycrisp Apple Bacon Grilled Cheese
Description
The recipe starts by cooking bacon until crisp, either pan-fried or oven-baked for convenience. On slices of sourdough or preferred bread, slices of gouda cheese are layered with peeled, thinly sliced Honeycrisp apple—a variety known for its balance of sweetness and tartness—and topped with the crispy bacon. Optionally, honey or fig jam can be drizzled over the apples to add a touch of sweetness.
The bread is buttered on both sides before cooking the sandwich on medium-low heat to slowly melt the cheese without burning the bread. This results in golden, lightly crisped bread exterior with a gooey, flavorful interior combining smoky bacon, tangy apple, and smooth gouda.
The sandwich is cut in half and served immediately to preserve the melted cheese and crisp texture, making it a satisfying and comforting dish with a blend of savory, sweet, and fruity elements.
Ingredients
- 4 lices bread Sourdough or your favorite
- 4 lices gouda cheese
- 4 lices Bacon
- 1 honeycrisp apple peeled and sliced
- butter for spreading on both sides of bread
- honey optional, or fig jam
Instructions
- Cook bacon according to package instructions. Pan-fry until crispy or bake on a foil-lined baking sheet in preheated 400-degree oven for 20 minutes. If you want the bacon to be extra-crispy, cook for 2 minutes longer. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- Place 1 gouda cheese slice on bread. Top with apple slices. May drizzle with honey or fig jam, if so desired. Top with another slice of gouda cheese. Top with crispy bacon.
- Spread butter on both sides of bread.
- Cook on medium-low heat (or even low) until lightly golden brown on each side and the cheese is melted.
- Cut in half and eat immediately.
