Grape Compote
Description
Grape Compote blends grapes with sugar and lemon juice to form a lightly thickened sauce. The method involves boiling the ingredients briefly, then simmering gently to soften the grapes and develop flavor. Star anise can be added to infuse a subtle aromatic note during cooking but is removed before serving.
Its soft, syrupy texture and mildly sweet-tart taste can complement breads, desserts, or breakfasts. The compote stores well in the refrigerator for several days or can be frozen for longer preservation.
Adjusting cooking time affects consistency, as the compote thickens upon cooling. Using ripe, seedless grapes enhances flavor and reduces preparation effort.
Ingredients
- 2 cups grapes 200g) any variety, seedless
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons water
- star anise optional
Instructions
- Add the grapes, sugar, lemon juice, water (and star anise, if using) to a pot, stir and bring to the boil.
- Allow it to boil for about 5 minutes, stirring often to stop it from scorching.
- Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer and bubble for 10 minutes. It will thicken further as it cools.
- Remove and discard the star anise.
- Serve warm or allow to cool and store in a sterilised jar in the fridge for up to 5 days (or freeze for up to 2 months).
Notes
- Choose ripe, seedless grapes for best taste and easier preparation.
- Cook grapes longer to achieve a smoother texture if preferred.
- Remember the compote thickens as it cools; adjust cooking time accordingly.
- This compote can be served warm or chilled depending on your preference.
- Store in a sterilized jar in the fridge up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
