Grapefruit Breakfast Brûlée

Grapefruit Breakfast Brûlée combines the bright, tart flavor of grapefruit with a crunchy caramelized sugar topping. The sections of grapefruit are carefully cut to separate the fruit from the skin, then sprinkled with sugar before torching or broiling to create a crispy, sweet crust that contrasts with the juicy fruit. This preparation makes a refreshing breakfast or morning treat with a textural twist.

Description

The Grapefruit Breakfast Brûlée features halved grapefruit scored and sectioned within the skin, topped with sugar and optionally a pinch of salt to balance flavors. The sugar is caramelized using a kitchen torch or broiler, forming a crisp, burnt-sugar crust that enhances the natural tartness of the fruit. The fruit remains juicy underneath, providing a combination of soft and crisp textures.

This dish is a light, invigorating option for breakfast or brunch, served immediately after caramelizing to retain the delicate textures. The crunch of the brûléed sugar complements the refreshing citrus notes.

Variations include using other tart fruits like pineapple, or adding caramelized fruit sections atop oatmeal for a textured breakfast. Care should be taken when broiling to use oven-safe vessels and to watch the sugar closely to avoid burning.
