Greek Seasoning
Description
This Greek Seasoning recipe combines a variety of dried herbs and spices to create a versatile blend that reflects common Greek flavors. Key ingredients such as Greek oregano and garlic powder provide earthy, savory notes, complemented by aromatic herbs like basil, dill, parsley, rosemary, and marjoram. A touch of cinnamon and nutmeg add subtle warmth and complexity, while black pepper and optional salt round out the profile.
The spices are mixed thoroughly and stored in an airtight container to preserve their flavor. This blend can be added to meats, vegetables, and sauces to impart characteristic Greek seasoning without needing individual herbs on hand.
Greek oregano is particularly notable for its more savory, earthy profile compared to other oregano varieties, enhancing the authenticity of the seasoning. Omitting salt allows for flexible seasoning control when cooking various dishes.
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons basil dried
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons oregano see note 1, Greek
- 1 teaspoon black pepper ground
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon dried dill weed
- 1 teaspoon marjoram dried
- 1 teaspoon parsley dried
- 1 teaspoon rosemary dried
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon thyme ground
- salt (see note 2)
Instructions
- In a small bowl or jar, add basil, garlic powder, Greek oregano, black pepper, cinnamon, dill, marjoram, parsley, rosemary, nutmeg, and thyme. Add salt to taste (I like 1 teaspoon, or omit entirely). Store in an airtight container.
Notes
- Use Greek oregano for its savory and earthy flavor, or substitute with your preferred oregano variety.
- Omit salt in the seasoning blend if you want to control salt levels separately during cooking.
- Store the seasoning in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to maintain potency for up to six months.
- This recipe yields just over 4 tablespoons (about 1/4 cup) of seasoning.
