Greek Yogurt Mashed Potatoes

Greek Yogurt Mashed Potatoes feature Yukon gold potatoes boiled with garlic, then mashed together with Greek yogurt, warm milk, butter, and seasoning. This creates creamy, tangy mashed potatoes with balanced richness from butter and yogurt. The use of yogurt adds a slight tang that brightens the dish and reduces reliance on heavier dairy.

Description

The recipe involves boiling peeled Yukon gold potato chunks and garlic cloves with salt until fork-tender. After draining, the potatoes and roasted garlic are mashed with Greek yogurt, butter, and black pepper. Warm milk is gradually added to achieve a smooth, creamy consistency while maintaining a hearty texture typical of mashed potatoes. Seasoning is adjusted by taste to enhance the flavors without overwhelming the mild potato base.

Yukon gold potatoes provide a buttery, creamy texture when cooked properly, complementing the tangy Greek yogurt. These mashed potatoes can be served as a side dish to a wide variety of meals, offering a fresher, lighter alternative to traditional cream-based mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 pounds potato peeled & cut into 2" chunks, Yukon gold variety
  • 4 garlic halved, cloves
  • 1 ¼ teaspoon salt divided
  • ½ cup Greek yogurt
  • ½ cup milk warmed
  • ¼ cup butter unsalted
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Place the potatoes, garlic and 1 teaspoon salt inside a large pot and cover them with cold water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the temperature to medium and cook covered until the potatoes are fork tender, 20-25 minutes.
  2. Drain the potatoes and garlic in a colander and return them to the pot. Add the Greek yogurt, butter, remaining ¼ teaspoon salt and pepper while the potatoes are still hot and use a fork, masher or electric beaters to mash the potatoes.
  3. Gradually add the milk while you continue to mash until you reach your desired consistency. Taste and season with more salt and pepper, if needed.
  4. Serve warm and top with more butter and black pepper, if desired.
