Green Peas with Bacon

Green Peas with Bacon combines crisp cooked bacon and sautéed onions with tender green peas cooked briefly in bacon fat and water until just soft. Garlic adds aroma, and seasoning with salt and pepper finishes the simple side dish. The peas retain a slight bite with smoky richness from bacon, perfect as a vegetable accompaniment.

Description

This recipe begins by cooking chopped raw bacon until crisp in a skillet, then removing it while leaving the rendered bacon fat. Finely diced onions are cooked in that fat until softened, and minced garlic is added briefly for fragrance. Frozen green peas are added along with a small amount of water, then covered and cooked over medium heat until tender but not mushy.

The lid is then removed to allow liquid to evaporate, concentrating flavor and preventing sogginess. The crispy bacon returns to the pan to garnish the peas, which are seasoned simply with salt and black pepper. The dish balances smoky, savory bacon with fresh sweetness from peas and aromatic onion and garlic.

Using frozen peas saves time and helps maintain bright green color and texture. If canned peas are used, rinsing and draining reduces excess salt and mushiness, and water can be omitted. Store-bought bacon bits can be a time-saver but cooking fresh bacon in the pan enriches the final flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 lices Bacon chopped
  • ¼ cup onion finely diced
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 2 cups green peas frozen
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Add raw bacon to a skillet and cook until browned and crisp. Remove the bacon from the pan, reserving the fat.
  2. Add the onion to the bacon fat and cook 3-4 minutes or until tender. Stir in garlic and cook just until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  3. Add frozen peas and 2 tablespoons water. Cover and cook over medium heat until peas are tender, about 4-5 minutes. Remove lid and cook until liquid evaporates.
  4. Season to taste with salt and pepper and garnish with crispy bacon.

Notes

  • Frozen peas help retain a crisp texture and reduce prep time compared to thawing.
  • If using canned peas, drain and rinse well and omit added water during cooking.
  • For convenience, store-bought bacon bits may be used with sautéed onions cooked in oil or butter instead of bacon fat.
