Grilled Cheese
Description
This Grilled Cheese recipe layers two slices of melty cheese such as Muenster between slices of bread, lightly pressed, then pan-cooked in melted butter. The sandwich is toasted slowly over medium-low heat allowing the bread to crisp evenly without burning and the cheese to soften and melt fully. Adding butter before each side enhances browning. Pressing lightly while cooking encourages even toasting and helps the cheese melt uniformly inside without crushing the sandwich.
The finished sandwich has a golden crust with a warm, creamy cheese center. It pairs well with soups or salads or can be enjoyed on its own as a quick, satisfying meal. Different cheese types can be used for varied flavors, accommodating what’s available in your kitchen.
Leftover grilled cheese sandwiches can be refrigerated up to 3 days and reheated in a skillet covered with a lid to restore crispness and melt the cheese. Prepping ingredients like shredding cheese or buttering bread ahead can ease assembly for busy times.
Ingredients
- 2 lices Muenster cheese such as American, Mozzarella, Colby, Cheddar, Havarti, Swiss, Fontina, Monterey Jack, Pepper Jack, or Provolone, or any melty cheese
- 2 lices white bread you can use any bread you have on hand
- 1 tablespoon butter unsalted
Instructions
- Layout 1 slice of bread on a cutting board or work surface—add two slices of cheese and top with the remaining slice of bread. Press down lightly.
- Heat ½ tablespoon butter in a small skillet over medium-low heat. Once melted, add the sandwiches and cook until the bread toasts and the cheese is slightly melted for 3 to 5 minutes. Flip with a spatula and add the remaining tablespoon of butter to the pan.
- Cook until the other side is toasted and the cheese is melted, about 3 minutes more, adjusting the heat as needed to keep the bread from burning before the cheese melts (lightly press down on the sandwich to encourage even browning and to help melt the cheese; be gentle, don’t smash it). Serve the Grilled Cheese immediately. Enjoy!
Notes
- Store leftover grilled cheese sandwiches in the refrigerator for up to 3 days to keep freshness.
- To reheat, cook in a skillet over medium-low heat covered with a lid or foil for 3-4 minutes on each side to regain crispness and melt cheese.
- You can prepare components in advance by grating cheese up to a week ahead or buttering bread and storing it refrigerated for a day before assembly.
