Grilled Cheese Sandwich Recipe

These grilled cheese sandwiches are made with thick Texas toast or sourdough bread and a layered blend of medium cheddar, Havarti, and Gouda cheeses. Buttered on the outside and cooked over medium-low heat in a skillet, they develop a golden brown crust while the smooth cheeses melt inside. The sandwich offers a rich, creamy texture with distinct cheese flavors melding together. It's a comforting choice for a simple lunch or snack when you want a warm, buttery bite with a stretchy cheese center.

Description

The Grilled Cheese Sandwich Recipe features thick slices of Texas toast or sourdough spread with butter on one side and stacked with layers of cheddar, Havarti, and Gouda cheeses. The sandwich is cooked in a skillet over medium-low heat to allow the bread to brown slowly while the cheeses melt thoroughly inside. Turning and pressing the sandwich helps the bread adhere to the cheese and creates an even crust. The combination of semi-soft cheeses offers a balance of sharpness from the cheddar and creaminess from the Havarti and Gouda, resulting in a smooth, flavorful melt enclosed in a crisp toasted bread exterior.

This sandwich works well as a quick lunch or snack. Its buttery, golden crust and melty interior satisfy a craving for comfort food without complexity. The method ensures the sandwich is golden and evenly heated, preserving the tenderness of the bread and the gooey cheese inside.

The recipe allows for substitutions among cheeses; Monterey Jack, Gruyere, or other melting cheeses can be used if desired. The key is to keep the heat low enough for the cheese to melt fully before the bread browns too much. Slicing sandwich diagonally provides a classic presentation.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 lices Texas toast thick sliced sandwich bread, or sourdough bread
  • 4 Tbsp butter unsalted
  • 4 lices cheddar cheese medium
  • 4 lices gouda cheese
  • 4 lices havarti cheese

Instructions

  1. Spread 1/2 Tbsp of butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  2. Set a cast iron skillet or heavy non-stick pan over medium/low heat. If using a griddle, it should be at 275˚F. Place 2 slices of bread in the skillet with the butter side down.
  3. Stack cheeses on one piece of toast: cheddar, havarti, then gouda. Once the bread is golden brown, close the sandwich with the crisp sides on the outside.
  4. Continue cooking until the bread is a rich golden brown, flipping once and press down lightly to help the bread stick to the cheese. Total cooking time should one 5-6 minutes. Keep the heat on medium-low for the bread to toast slowly, giving your cheese a chance to fully melt and adhere to the bread.
  5. Once you see the cheese has melted and breads are browned, remove to a plate and cut in half diagonally to serve. Repeat with the next sandwich.

Notes

  • The recipe combines three types of cheese, but any melting cheese like Monterey Jack or Gruyere can be used instead.
  • Use medium-low heat to toast the bread slowly, allowing cheeses to melt thoroughly without burning.
  • Press the sandwich lightly during cooking to help the bread and cheese stick together and develop a uniform crust.
