Grilled Ham Steaks
Description
This recipe uses large pre-cut ham steaks, which are grilled briefly on each side to develop grill marks and warmed through. The ham is glazed multiple times with a sauce made by boiling teriyaki sauce, brown sugar, and crushed pineapple, then thickening it slightly with cornstarch to create a sticky glaze.
The result is slices of ham with a grilled texture and a flavorful, slightly sweet coating that complements the ham’s saltiness. The caramelized teriyaki-pineapple glaze adds a bright and savory layer without overpowering the meat.
Serving suggestions include pairing with potato casseroles, biscuits and gravy for breakfast, or vegetable side dishes like honey-glazed carrots and roasted potatoes. The ham steaks are versatile for breakfast, lunch, or dinner depending on the choice of accompaniments.
The notes mention an alternative cooking method on the stovetop in a frying pan with butter, offering flexibility if a grill is not available.
Ingredients
- 3 large ham steaks cut
- 1 cup teriyaki sauce
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup pineapple crushed
- 1 Tablespoon corn starch
Instructions
- Turn barbecue grill burners on high with the lid down to heat up.
- In a small bowl, mix together the cornstarch with 2 Tablespoons cold water. Set aside.
- In a small sauce pan over medium heat, mix together the teriyaki sauce, brown sugar, and crushed pineapple.
- Whisk the mixture into your saucepan over the stove. Bring the sauce to a boil, then remove from heat when it begins to thicken.
- Place ham steaks on grill. They only need a few minutes on each side, just long enough to make nice grill marks. Glaze each side before turning with the teriyaki mixture.
- Remove from the grill to a serving plate and top with the remaining sauce.
Notes
- You can cook the ham steaks on the stovetop in a frying pan with melted butter over medium heat as an alternative to grilling.
- These ham steaks serve well with potato casserole, au gratin potatoes, or vegetable sides like honey-glazed carrots and roasted Brussels sprouts.
- Consider serving as a breakfast main with scrambled eggs and biscuits with gravy for a hearty meal.
