Grilled Hot Honey BBQ Smoked Sausage Skewers

Grilled Hot Honey BBQ Smoked Sausage Skewers feature smoked turkey sausage paired with bell peppers and red onion, brushed with a blend of barbecue sauce and hot honey for a balanced sweet and spicy glaze. Grilled to achieve slight char and juicy sausage pieces, these skewers are finished with fresh cilantro and served over rice, offering a mix of smoky, tangy, and mildly spicy flavors with vibrant vegetable texture.

Description

This recipe assembles smoked turkey sausage, cut into bite-sized pieces, alongside chopped bell peppers and red onions threaded on skewers. The barbecue sauce mixed with hot honey creates a glaze brushed generously over the skewers before and during grilling. Cooking on a high heat grill allows the ingredients to caramelize and develop slight char edges, enhancing flavor and texture.

The combination of the savory sausage, crisp-tender vegetables, and the glaze’s sweet and spicy notes produces a layered taste experience. Garnishing with fresh chopped cilantro adds a bright herbal element. Serving the skewers over rice provides a complementary neutral base and rounds out the meal.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 13 ounces smoked turkey sausage
  • 3 bell peppers chopped into pieces
  • 1 red onion chopped into pieces
  • salt kosher salt
  • black pepper kosher salt
  • ¼ cup barbecue sauce your favorite
  • 2 tablespoons hot honey
  • cilantro for serving, fresh, chopped
  • rice for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your grill to high.
  2. Cut the turkey sausage into pieces - I like to cut them into 1-inch pieces to match the size of the peppers and onions.
  3. Skewer the sausage, peppers and onions in any way you’d like. I usually do 4 to 5 pieces of sausage per skewer and layer them with peppers and onions. No rhyme or reason, just what fits on the skewer!
  4. Stir together the BBQ sauce and hot honey. Brush it all over the sausage skewers.
  5. Place the skewers on the grill. Grill for 10 to 12 minutes, rotating the skewers every 2 to 3 minutes or so. When the skewers are finished, you can brush them with more of the honey BBA mixture if you’d like!
  6. Sprinkle fresh cilantro on top and serve over rice.
