Grilled Lime Butter Salmon Skewers

These salmon skewers feature thick, evenly cut pieces of skinless salmon brushed with a lime-infused butter sauce before grilling. The method includes a lime-butter mixture with garlic and zest that adds subtle citrus brightness and richness. Grilling the skewers until just cooked ensures tender, flavorful salmon perfect for outdoor meals or gatherings.

Description

Grilled Lime Butter Salmon Skewers highlight salmon fillet pieces threaded onto skewers and brushed with a distinctive lime butter sauce. Preparation starts with removing the skin and cutting the fish into consistent 1 1/2 inch chunks. The lime butter sauce combines melted butter, garlic, lime juice, and lime zest, cooked briefly to develop flavor. The salmon is grilled while the sauce is applied to maintain moisture and infuse the citrusy garlic butter taste. The result is salmon with a balanced flavor, a tender texture from grilling, and a hint of bright lime scent that pairs well with simple sides.

The grilling technique requires turning the skewers several times over 6-10 minutes for even cooking without drying the fish. Using metal or soaked wooden skewers prevents charring and ensures safe grilling. The last step of drizzling leftover lime butter enhances the salmon's flavor before serving, making these skewers a straightforward grilled fish option where the lime butter acts as both marinade and finishing sauce.

These skewers work well for cookouts or light dinners and can be served alongside grilled vegetables or a fresh salad, complementing the citrusy butter glaze. The recipe encourages selecting salmon fillets with consistent thickness to promote even cooking on the skewers.

Choose salmon fillets with uniform thickness for more even cooking on skewers. If using wooden skewers, soak them for at least 30 minutes before grilling to avoid burning.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 large (1-1 ½ pounds) salmon see note, fillet
  • 12 tablespoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons garlic minced
  • lime juice of 1
  • lime plus extra for topping, zest of 1

Instructions

  1. Grease and preheat your grill. Use a very sharp knife to remove the skin from the salmon fillet and cut salmon into 1 1/2 inch pieces.
  2. Thread salmon pieces onto your metal or wooden skewers being sure to keep at least 1/2 inch between each piece of salmon. (if using wooden skewers, be sure to soak them in water for 30 minutes prior to using so they don't catch fire on the grill)
  3. Prepare your lime-butter sauce by melting your butter over medium heat in a medium size sauce pan. Once melted, bring to a boil and cook for 3-4 minutes until color starts to darken a bit.
  4. Add garlic, lime juice, and lime zest to your melted butter and stir over heat for 1 minute. Remove from heat.
  5. Brush salmon skewers with butter sauce. (you should have some leftover) Grill salmon for 6-10 minutes, turning throughout to ensure even cooking. Remove from heat and drizzle remaining lime butter sauce over salmon and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Pick salmon fillets that are thick and of even thickness to help pieces cook evenly on the skewers.
  • Soak wooden skewers in water before grilling to prevent them from catching fire.
