Grilled Pizza

Grilled Pizza features hand-stretched pizza dough cooked directly on a preheated and oiled grill to develop a golden, slightly charred crust. After grilling one side to get crispy grill marks, the pizza is flipped, topped with sauce, cheese, and various toppings, then returned to the grill to melt the cheese and finish cooking the crust, resulting in a smoky-flavored, crispy yet tender pizza.

Description

The pizza dough is divided into portions and stretched or rolled to desired size and thickness, then brushed with olive oil. The oiled dough is carefully placed oil-side down on a medium-high heat grill cleaned and oiled to prevent sticking. Cooking uncovered for 2-3 minutes allows the crust to develop grill marks and a golden bottom crust.

After flipping the dough, sauce and chosen toppings such as pepperoni, vegetables, or different cheeses are added to the cooked side. The grill heat is lowered to prevent burning, and the pizza is slid back onto the grill to cook until the cheese melts and the bottom crust is golden brown, approximately 3-5 minutes. This method infuses the crust with a smoky flavor and creates a contrast between crispy and soft textures.

Grilled pizza offers a versatile outdoor cooking option differing from oven baking, allowing customization of crust thickness and toppings. It is well-suited for casual meals where a smoky crust and quickly melted cheese are desired.

Ingredients

Servings
  • pizza dough homemade (my recipe makes 2 large pizzas and could be halved, or store-bought
  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • pizza sauce , 5-minute pizza sauce, white garlic sauce, BBQ sauce, alfredo sauce
  • cheese desired toppings, etc
  • pepperoni
  • meat
  • vegetables

Instructions

  1. Make sure grill is well cleaned and oiled, to prevent the crust from sticking. Preheat it to 425 degrees (medium-high heat).
  2. Divide pizza dough into about 5-8 portions (depending on how big and thick you want your pizza crust). Stretch or roll dough into desired size and thinness and place on a piece of parchment paper.
  3. Brush tops of the prepared dough with oil, then lift the parchment the crust is on and carefully flip the crusts onto the grill, oil side down. Peel the parchment paper off.
  4. Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes and check for doneness with tongs to see if the bottom side has grill marks and is golden brown. Flip the pizzas onto a plate and add sauce and toppings to the cooked side.
  5. Lower the grill heat slightly and slide pizzas back onto the grill to cook the bottom side for another 3-5 minutes, until cheese is melted and bottom crust is golden.
