Grilled Potato Slices
Description
Grilled Potato Slices are prepared by cutting russet potatoes into quarter-inch thick slices and seasoning them simply with olive oil, kosher salt, and freshly cracked black pepper. The slices are cooked on a medium grill, starting at medium-high to preheat, then lowered to medium to cook the potatoes gently. Cooking each side until golden and slightly crisp produces a satisfying contrast with the tender interior. The slices can be grilled with ridged or straight cuts, depending on preference, providing some variety in texture.
The grilling method enhances the earthy flavor of the russets and adds a mild smokiness from the open flame or grill pan. The seasoning keeps the taste straightforward, letting the potato's natural flavors shine. Once cooked, the slices should be served immediately, ideally accompanied by a dipping sauce that complements the grilled notes.
This dish is practical for summer barbecues or when seeking an alternative to traditional fried or baked potatoes. The recipe’s simplicity and reliance on common pantry ingredients make it accessible for cooks at various skill levels.
Ingredients
- 2 russet potato 13 oz total, medium; washed
- 2 teaspoon olive oil
- kosher salt to taste, fresh cracked pepper
- black pepper to taste, fresh cracked pepper
Instructions
- Preheat grill to medium-high heat (an indoor grill would work too).
- Cut potatoes into 1/4-inch thick slices. I used a crinkle cutter with ridges but straight cuts are fine.
- Toss the potatoes with olive oil. Add salt, and pepper to your taste.
- Reduce heat on the grill to medium and lay the potatoes slices straight onto the grill; close the lid.
- Cook until the potatoes are golden on one side, about 6 to 10 minutes, making sure they don't burn and adjusting flame accordingly.
- Turn and cook until tender inside when pierced with a fork, but slightly crisp and golden brown on the outside.
- Remove from grill, and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- Ensure even thickness of potato slices for uniform cooking.
- Monitor grill heat carefully to avoid burning while achieving a golden crust.
- Serve slices promptly to enjoy the crisp texture before they soften.
- Using a crinkle cutter adds texture but is optional.
