Grilled Ribs

These grilled pork ribs are seasoned with a robust dry rub combining cumin, smoked paprika, garlic and onion powders, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, and cayenne for balanced heat. The ribs are cooked low and slow on the grill for tenderness, then finished with a sweet-tangy barbecue sauce that caramelizes nicely during the final minutes of grilling. Removing the membrane beforehand allows the flavors to penetrate better while ensuring a tender bite. The resting period after grilling keeps the meat juicy.

Description

Grilled Ribs involves applying a well-balanced dry rub of spices and brown sugar to two racks of pork ribs after removing the membrane. The ribs are cooked on a preheated grill set to low heat, starting meat side down to develop flavor and smoke infusion over about 45 minutes. The ribs are then brushed liberally with a sweet and tangy barbecue sauce on both sides and cooked bone side down to caramelize the sauce for 10 to 15 minutes. This method produces flavorful ribs with a seasoned crust and moist interior.

The combination of cumin and smoked paprika adds a smoky depth, while garlic and onion powders provide savory notes. The brown sugar balances spice and salt for a rounded flavor. The ribs develop a tender texture through low heat and gradual cooking time, and the resting step lets juices redistribute to enhance moistness.

Serve these grilled ribs fresh off the grill glazed with barbecue sauce. Pair with classic sides like coleslaw or cornbread for a balanced meal. The recipe uses a specialty barbecue sauce brand noted for sweetness but any sweet and tangy sauce can substitute.

The nutritional note explains the dry rub recipe makes extra seasoning and that the nutrition facts use half the dry rub amount and one cup of barbecue sauce, which may help when planning portions or modifying the recipe.

Ingredients

Servings

Dry Rub

  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Grilled Ribs

  • 2 racks pork ribs
  • barbecue sauce Sweet N Tangy brand

Instructions

  1. Combine all of the dry rub ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly.
  2. Preheat the grill on low heat for 15 minutes. I use a propane grill, you will need more time to preheat if using a charcoal grill.
  3. Pull the ribs from the refrigerator for 15 minutes before grilling so the meat doesn't get shocked when placed on the heat. Remove the ribs from the package and then pull the membrane off the back of the ribs and discard it.
  4. Rub all sides of the ribs with the dry rub. You will have extra so be sure to use one hand to sprinkle the rub over the meat and the other to rub it in. This will ensure that you don't contaminate the rub.
  5. Place the ribs on the grill with the meat side down. Cover the grill and cook the ribs for 45 minutes.
  6. Brush with the barbecue sauce and then flip the ribs over before brushing with more barbecue sauce. Cook the ribs bone side down for 10 to 15 minutes.
  7. Remove from the grill and cover loosely with foil on a sheetpan. Rest the ribs for 10 to 15 minutes.
  8. Slice into 1 or 2 bone sections and serve warm with more barbecue sauce on the side.

Notes

  • Removing the membrane from the back of the ribs is key to better seasoning absorption and tenderness.
  • Allow ribs to come to near room temperature before grilling to prevent shock from heat.
  • Use separate hands to apply dry rub to avoid contaminating the remaining seasoning mix.
  • Rest the grilled ribs covered loosely with foil to retain juiciness before serving.
  • The nutritional info is based on using half the dry rub and 1 cup of barbecue sauce for the recipe.
