Grinch Popcorn

Grinch Popcorn is a festive snack combining homemade stovetop popcorn with melted candy melts and assorted Christmas candies. The popcorn is coated in smooth, sweet candy and mixed with colorful, crunchy holiday treats to create a fun, textured cluster. It offers both a crispy and creamy experience, making it ideal for holiday parties or gift-giving during the festive season.

Description

Grinch Popcorn starts with stovetop-popped kernels cooked in oil until crisp and light. Once popped, the warm popcorn is coated evenly with melted candy melts, which harden into a shiny, sweet shell. Various Christmas candies and mix-ins can be folded in to add texture and flavor variety, turning it into festive clusters. After spreading on parchment and cooling, the candy coating solidifies, making the treat easier to handle and enjoy.

The combination of the crunchy popcorn base and the hardened candy coating creates an enjoyable contrast in texture. The incorporated holiday candies add bursts of sweetness and color, enhancing the snack's appeal. It is particularly suitable for sharing at holiday gatherings or using as homemade gifts.

For best results, melt the candy melts carefully in short microwave bursts and mix them into the popcorn quickly before they harden. Once set, the clusters can be stored in airtight containers or Ziplock bags for two to three days, maintaining their crunch and flavor. You can customize the treat by adding spices like cinnamon and nutmeg or drizzling melted chocolate over the top.

Ingredients

Servings

Grinch Popcorn

  • 10 cups popped popcorn see stovetop popcorn recipe below, 1250g
  • 12 ounces Candy Melts 340g
  • Christmas candy assorted
  • mix-ins assorted

Stovetop Popcorn

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or coconut oil
  • ½ cup popcorn kernel 64g
  • salt to taste

Instructions

Grinch Popcorn

  1. Add the popcorn in a large bowl and grab the rest of the ingredients.
  2. Melt the candy melts in a large bowl according to the packet instructions.
  3. Pour the melted candy into the popcorn and mix until all coated.
  4. Then stir in the Christmas candy, spread the mixture onto parchment paper, and allow the mixture to cool so the chocolate hardens.

Stovetop Popcorn

  1. Melt the coconut oil in a large saucepan on medium-high heat.
  2. Then add 3 or 4 popcorn kernels into the oil and cover the pan. When the kernels pop, add the rest of the popcorn kernels in the pan and shake gently so that they lay in an even layer and cover.
  3. Once the kernels start popping, you should keep shaking the pan gently so that the kernels keep dropping back into the coconut oil and as many as possible pop. Try to leave the lid open a tiny bit as this helps to reduce the steam so you get nice crispy popcorn.
  4. Eventually, the popping will slow down, at which point you can remove the pan from the heat and decant into a sharing bowl.

Notes

  • Use a silicone spatula or spoon to mix the melted candy melts into the popcorn since the candy can be hot to handle.
  • Prepare all ingredients beforehand to ensure smooth mixing, as candy melts harden quickly once cooled.
  • Melt candy melts in short microwave intervals, stirring between, to prevent burning; aim for a smooth, pourable consistency.
  • Consider adding extras like holiday cookie pieces, sprinkles, marshmallows, or spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg for flavor variation.
  • After cooling and setting, break the popcorn into bite-sized clusters for easy serving.
  • Store finished popcorn in airtight containers for 2 to 3 days to keep crispness.
  • This snack can also be made using melted marshmallow dyed green and drizzled with chocolate as an alternative method.
