Ground Beef Taco Meat

Ground Beef Taco Meat is made by browning ground beef with sautéed onions and garlic, then seasoning generously with taco spices and simmering with chicken broth until fully cooked. The process enhances flavor development and moisture retention, producing tender, seasoned meat perfect for tacos, burritos, or other Mexican-inspired dishes. A finishing splash of lime juice adds brightness to the savory mixture.

Description

This taco meat preparation begins by cooking diced onion in avocado oil until translucent, followed by garlic for additional aroma. Ground beef is then added and browned without disturbance to create a sear, enhancing flavor. The meat is broken up, seasoned with a homemade taco seasoning blend, and mixed thoroughly. Chicken broth is poured in and the mixture is brought to a boil, then simmered covered to ensure the beef cooks through and flavors meld.

The meat absorbs the spices evenly, resulting in a balanced savory and mildly spicy profile. Lime juice added at the end provides a fresh acidity that brightens the dish. This seasoned beef is versatile for use in tacos, burritos, salads, or other dishes requiring taco meat.

Fat can be drained if preferred, but leaving some preserves moisture and richness. Using medium to medium-high heat aids proper browning and flavor development.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 Tbsp avocado oil
  • 1/2 medium yellow onion chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 taco seasoning homemade, batch
  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth or beef broth or water
  • salt to taste, sea salt
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp lime juice

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil to medium or medium-high heat in a large skillet. Add the onion and saute, stirring occasionally until onion begins to turn translucent, about 5 to 8 minutes.
  2. Add the garlic and saute another 2 minutes.
  3. Make space for the ground beef and place the ground beef directly onto the skillet. Allow one side to brown for 3 to 5 minutes without touching it (you can stir around the onions during this process so they don’t burn).
  4. Flip the meat and allow the other side to brown 3 to 5 minutes.
  5. Use a spatula to break the meat into smaller chunks. If you'd like, drain the fat from the meat. I use 90/10 meat and choose to leave the fat in. Sprinkle all of the taco seasoning over the meat.
  6. Continue breaking up the meat and stirring until well combined, but don’t cook the beef all the way through just yet.
  7. Pour in the chicken broth and stir. Bring mixture to a full boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low.
  8. Cover with a lid and cook 10 to 15 minutes, until beef is cooked through and sauce has thickened.
  9. Taste for flavor and add lime juice, sea salt, and/or hot sauce or salsa to taste.

Notes

  • Use 5 tablespoons of store-bought taco seasoning or 4 tablespoons of chili powder if skipping the homemade blend.
