Ground Beef Tacos

Ground Beef Tacos feature sautéed lean beef seasoned with taco spices and simmered in passata and broth to create a flavorful filling. The recipe includes frying corn tortillas briefly in hot oil until pliable and slightly crisp, then folding them around the meat. This step adds texture and helps hold the meat. The tacos can be served with typical accompaniments, providing a straightforward way to make seasoned taco meat and crispy shells from scratch.

Description

This recipe cooks lean ground beef browned in olive oil and crumbled finely to ensure even cooking. It is then combined with a homemade or packet taco seasoning, passata tomato sauce, and broth or water to simmer until thickened and saucy. The method allows the meat to absorb the spices and tomato flavor while remaining juicy.

Separately, corn tortillas are lightly fried in neutral cooking oil until softened and edged with crispness, then drained on paper towels and shaped by folding. This frying step improves texture and structure, making the taco more enjoyable to eat.

Assembled tacos can be filled with the savory meat for a classic Mexican-inspired dish. The notes mention a homemade taco seasoning alternative without salt, suggesting control over sodium in the recipe.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef lean
  • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning (1 packet/1oz)
  • cup passata
  • ¼ cup beef broth or water
  • ½ cup neutral cooking oil generic cooking oil
  • 12 corn tortillas

Instructions

  1. Heat 2 teaspoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. When the oil is hot, add 1 pound of ground beef and stir with a wooden spoon for 2 to 3 minutes until browned and mostly cooked through. Make sure you are breaking up the beef into small pieces.
  3. If there is any oil in the skillet, drain it. Add ⅔ cup passata sauce, 2 tablespoons taco seasoning, and ¼ cup of water or broth.
  4. Stir until combined and lower the heat to medium to medium low. Let the taco meat simmer for up to 10 minutes or until the tomato sauce as cooked down to your desired sauciness.
  5. Meanwhile, add a paper towel to a sheet pan.
  6. Add ½ cup of oil to another large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the tortilla to the oil and fry each side for about 30 seconds.
  7. Using tongs, transfer the tortillas to the lined sheet pan to absorb any extra oil, and carefully fold the tortilla over to create a taco shape.
  8. When done, serve the tortillas with the taco meat and your desired toppings.
