Description

The recipe starts by softening diced onion and red bell pepper in olive oil, which provides a flavorful base. Ground turkey is browned and broken up to cook evenly before incorporating beans and two types of canned tomatoes. A blend of chili powder, cumin, oregano, cayenne, garlic, black pepper, and salt season the mixture, giving it characteristic chili flavor with a mild to moderate heat level due to cayenne.

After bringing to a boil, the chili simmers for 20 to 30 minutes, allowing flavors to combine and the chili to thicken to a satisfying consistency. This dish is protein-rich and filling, ideal for serving with toppings such as cheese, sour cream, or diced onions according to preference.

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days. For those sensitive to spice, omitting the cayenne reduces heat without sacrificing flavor.

  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ yellow onion (diced)
  • 1 red bell pepper (diced)
  • 2 can red kidney beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes (15 ounces)
  • 1 can diced tomatoes (15 ounces)
  • 2 Tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon oregano dried
  • 1 Tablespoon garlic minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups chicken broth

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add in the onion and red bell pepper. Sauté for approximately 5 minutes until the veggies are soft. 
  3. Add in the ground turkey and brown the ground turkey. Break up the turkey as it cooks and cook until the ground turkey is no longer pink.  
  4. Add in the remaining ingredients and stir to combine. 
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and allow the mixture to simmer for about 20-30 minutes until the flavors are combined and the chili has thickened.  
  6. Serve with your favorite chili toppings and enjoy!

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container refrigerated for up to 5 days.
  • Omit cayenne pepper if a milder chili is desired.
