Guacamole Turkey Burgers
Description
Guacamole Turkey Burgers are made by mixing ground turkey with grated onion and garlic, seasoned with smoked paprika, cumin, salt, pepper, and a splash of Worcestershire sauce, then bound with egg white and bread crumbs. The patties are cooked in a skillet until golden brown outside and fully cooked inside. A quick guacamole is prepared by mashing half the avocado while leaving the other half in chunks, then mixing with chopped cherry tomatoes, cilantro, lime juice, and salt. The burgers are assembled with lettuce and quick-pickled onions inside bread buns, creating a layered combination of savory, creamy, and fresh flavors.
The grilling or skillet cooking method helps seal in juices, while the spices add complexity to the turkey. The guacamole’s texture contrast and acidity balance the richness of the meat. These burgers can be served as a satisfying main dish for a casual lunch or dinner.
Resting the patties for 10 minutes after cooking helps redistribute juices. Adjust the guacamole texture to preference by either mashing more or leaving chunks. Using 94% lean turkey keeps the burgers moist without excess fat.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground turkey (I like 94%)
- 1 onion finely grated, or shallot
- 1 garlic finely grated, clove
- 2 tablespoons seasoned bread crumbs
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper freshly cracked
- Worcestershire sauce splash
- 1 egg lightly beaten, white
- 4 to 6 bread buns of your choice
- lettuce for your burgers
- onions quick pickled
- 1 avocado chopped
- 1 cherry tomato chopped, handful
- 2 tablespoons cilantro chopped
- ½ lime juiced
- pinch salt
Instructions
- Place the ground turkey in a bowl. Grate in the shallot and the garlic. Add in the bread crumbs, paprika, cumin, salt and pepper. Splash in a drop or so of Worcestershire sauce. Add the beaten egg white and mix everything together (it works best if you use clean hands!) until combined, but don’t over mix. Form the mixture into 4 or 6 patties (or however many you’d like!).
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a drop of olive oil. Add the burgers and cook until they are brown on the outsides, about 5 minutes per side. To make sure the burgers don’t dry out, you can check the internal temperature – you want it to be about 175 to 180. I let the burgers rest for 10 minutes before eating.
- To make the quick guac, chopped the avocado into chunks. I like to take half of this and smash it with a fork, and keep the rest cubed for a chunky guac. Do it however you love! Mix in the tomatoes, cilantro, lime and salt.
- Place your lettuce on the bun and add the burger on top. Top with a few scoops of the guacamole. You can also top with some pickled onions if you’d like! Serve immediately.
