Ham and Broccoli Quiche

The Ham and Broccoli Quiche features a creamy custard filling made with eggs, milk, and mustard powder, combined with sautéed onion, garlic, fresh broccoli, diced cooked ham, and shredded gouda cheese all baked in a deep dish pie crust. The savory quiche has a tender, baked texture with rich cheese melding the flavors of ham and broccoli. It is a filling dish suitable for brunch, lunch, or a light dinner.

Description

This Ham and Broccoli Quiche starts with a deep dish pie crust as the base. The filling includes sautéed yellow onion and garlic with small chopped fresh broccoli, which softens slightly before combining with diced cooked ham and shredded gouda cheese. A custard mixture of eggs, milk, salt, black pepper, and dry mustard powder is whisked and poured over the layered ingredients in the crust. Baking at 375 degrees until golden and set produces a quiche with a firm yet tender texture and melded savory flavors from the ham, broccoli, and gouda.

The quiche can be served warm or cooled and works well with side salads or fresh fruit for a satisfying meal. It’s suitable for brunch or any meal where a balanced, rich egg dish is desired without overly heavy components.

To avoid the crust over-browning during baking, the edges can be covered with foil. Allowing the quiche to cool for about 20 minutes before slicing helps it hold together for neat servings. The recipe adapts easily to include other vegetables or substitutes for the ham.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pie crust refrigerated, deep dish
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 2 garlic minced, cloves
  • 1 1/2 cups broccoli chopped small, fresh
  • 3/4 cup ham diced small, cooked
  • 1 1/2 cups gouda cheese shredded
  • 4 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder dry
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Prepare pie crust as directed on the package for one crust using a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, and cook for 3-4 minutes. Add in broccoli and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes, until broccoli has softened slightly.
  3. Place the cooked veggies into the bottom of crust.
  4. Sprinkle ham over the top of the veggies.
  5. Sprinkle Gouda over the top of the ham.
  6. In a large bowl, whisk eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and dry mustard together and beat well.
  7. Pour the egg mixture over the top of the quiche.
  8. Bake in preheated oven for 35-45 minutes or until quiche is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center of the quiche comes out clean. Let the quiche cool on a wire rack for 20 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Substitute ham with bacon or sausage to change the flavor profile.
  • Add vegetables such as spinach, diced red pepper, or mushrooms for variation.
  • Use a tart pan instead of a pie plate for a different shape.
  • Cover crust edges with foil if they brown too quickly while baking.
  • Let cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing to set properly.
  • Prepare up to two days in advance and refrigerate until baking.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days.
  • Freeze fully cooled quiche wrapped in plastic wrap and foil for up to three months; thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
  • Reheat in a 325°F oven for about 15 minutes until warmed through.
