Ham and Cheese Pinwheels
Description
Ham and Cheese Pinwheels feature a soft pizza dough base spread with thin layers of ham and Swiss cheese, then rolled and sliced to create spiraled bites. The buttery topping with brown sugar, mustard, and poppy seeds adds a balance of sweet and savory notes that bake into a lightly caramelized glaze on top. Baking at a moderate temperature yields golden brown pinwheels with tender interiors and slightly crispy edges.
These pinwheels work well as appetizers, party snacks, or a casual meal accompaniment. Adding chopped parsley after baking adds a fresh color and mild herbaceous note. They are best served warm to enjoy the melted layers fully.
You can prepare them in advance by assembling the rolls and storing them unbaked in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours, covered with foil. Use either pizza dough or crescent roll sheets as a dough base depending on your preference.
Ingredients
- 1 tube pizza dough refrigerated
- 3/4 lb ham very thinly sliced
- 8 ounces swiss cheese very thinly sliced
- 8 tablespoons butter melted
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
- cooking spray
- 1 tablespoon parsley optional, chopped
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9"x13" pan with cooking spray.
- Unroll the pizza dough onto a non-stick surface and roll it into a large rectangle, roughly 13"x8" in size.
- Layer the ham on top of the pizza dough to cover it completely, then layer the cheese in the same fashion.
- Starting at one of the long ends, tightly roll up the dough, jelly roll style, pinching the end to seal.
- Cut the loaf crosswise into 12 equal sized pieces, then arrange in the prepared pan.
- Whisk together the butter, brown sugar, Dijon mustard and poppy seeds, then pour evenly over the rolls.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Sprinkle with parsley if desired, then serve.
Notes
- Use crescent roll sheets as an alternative dough option by substituting two 8-ounce cans for the pizza dough.
- Pinwheels can be assembled ahead of time and stored unbaked in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours; cover with foil before baking.
