Ham and Cheese Sliders
Description
Ham and Cheese Sliders combine soft white or Hawaiian rolls with layers of honey ham and Swiss cheese. The rolls are split and spread with a mixture of mayonnaise and Miracle Whip to add moisture and flavor beneath the fillings. They are arranged tightly in a baking dish and topped with a poppy seed sauce made from melted butter, yellow mustard, onion, Worcestershire sauce, and poppy seeds. Baking at 350 degrees heats the sliders until the cheese melts and the tops become lightly browned and slightly crispy.
The sliders’ texture contrasts the tender, slightly sweet rolls with melted cheese and savory ham, complemented by the buttery poppy seed sauce. Baking them closely together ensures the sandwiches remain soft and easier to pick up.
This recipe suits casual gatherings or meals where finger foods are welcome. The sliders can be served warm right out of the oven and pairs well with simple side dishes or dips. They can be assembled ahead but are best baked within a day to avoid sogginess from the mayo mixture. Leftovers should be stored promptly to maintain freshness.
The recipe notes suggest not assembling more than a day before baking to prevent soggy rolls and hint at proper storage of leftovers. Covering the sliders during baking helps melt the cheese without drying out the tops, and finishing uncovered adds a slight crispness to the crust.
Ingredients
- 24 white dinner roll sweet Hawaiian rolls work well here, or slider rolls
- 24 honey ham slices
- 24 swiss cheese small slices
- 1/3 /3 cup mayonnaise
- 1/3 /3 cup Miracle Whip
Poppy seed sauce:
- 1 teaspoon poppy seeds
- 1 1/2 /2 Tablespoons yellow mustard
- 1/2 /2 cup butter melted
- 1 Tablespoon onion minced
- 1/2 /2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Slice rolls lengthwise with a large serrated knife.
- In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise and miracle whip. Spread onto both sides of the center of each roll. Place a slice of ham and a slice of Swiss on the bottom half of each roll. Close rolls and place them into a large baking dish or heavy cookie sheet. Place very close together.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together all of the poppy seed sauce ingredients. Pour melted butter evenly over all of the sandwiches. You do not have to use all of the sauce! Just use enough to cover the tops. Let sit 10 minutes or until butter sets slightly. Cover with aluminum foil and bake in preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until cheese melts. Uncover and cook for 2 additional minutes or until tops of the rolls are slightly brown and crispy. Serve warm. Note: Sandwiches can be assembled ahead of time. I don't like to do it more than a day ahead because they can get soggy from the mayo mixture. Store leftovers in an airtight container.
Notes
- Slide assembly is best within one day to avoid soggy bread caused by the mayo mixture.
- Store any leftover sliders properly to maintain freshness and texture.
- Cover sliders with foil during part of baking to melt cheese, then uncover briefly to crisp tops.
