Ham and Cheese Sliders
Description
This recipe begins by slicing soft square dinner rolls horizontally, then spreading yellow mustard on both halves. Each slider is layered with folded slices of ham and Swiss cheese, seasoned with black pepper, then topped with the roll tops. A mixture of melted butter, finely chopped onion, poppy seeds, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and additional mustard is brushed liberally over the sides and tops of the assembled sliders.
The sliders are baked covered at moderate heat until warm and the cheese softens, allowing the flavors to meld. The sweet rolls provide a soft crumb that balances the savory ham and cheese, while the flavorful butter topping adds moisture and a slight crunch from the poppy seeds and onions.
These sliders are suited for parties, game days, or casual meals, serving about 12 sliders sufficient for six to twelve people depending on serving context. They can be varied by swapping in different deli meats and cheeses to suit taste.
Leftovers store well refrigerated for up to 4 days and can be reheated. It is possible to assemble the sliders ahead and refrigerate before baking to streamline preparation.
Ingredients
- 12 quare white dinner rolls see notes, soft
- 6 tablespoons yellow mustard
- 12 thin slices ham deli
- 12 thin slices swiss cheese
- black pepper freshly ground
- 1/4 cup butter
- 2 tablespoons onion finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Place the oven rack in the middle position and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Slice the bread rolls in half, horizontally. Spread 4 tablespoons of the yellow mustard evenly on the cut sides of the roll tops and bottoms. Place the roll bottoms cut side up in a 13 inch by 9 inch baking dish.
- Fold the ham slice into thirds, and then in half. Place one piece of ham on each bottom. Fold the Swiss cheese in the same manner as the ham and place on top of the ham. Season with freshly ground black pepper, to taste. Top with the roll tops.
- In a medium bowl, combine butter, onion, and poppy seeds. Place in the microwave and heat until the butter is melted and the onions are softened about one minute. Whisk in the Worcestershire sauce, the garlic powder, and the two remaining tablespoons of mustard.
- Brush the sides and the tops of the sandwiches liberally with the poppy seed mixture using a pastry brush, and spoon the remaining solids over the tops. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and allow time for the sandwiches to absorb the sauce, about ten minutes.
- Bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake uncovered until the cheese has melted and the tops are slightly firm, about 7 to 9 minutes. Allow the sandwiches to cool, about 10 minutes. Serve.
Notes
- Soft dinner rolls such as Hawaiian sweet rolls work well but any soft square rolls can be used.
- Worcestershire sauce can be substituted with soy sauce if unavailable.
- This recipe yields 12 sliders, suitable for 6 hungry individuals or 9 to 12 as part of an appetizer spread.
- Leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheated gently.
- Sliders can be assembled, brushed with butter mixture, covered, and refrigerated up to one day before baking.
- Variations: swap ham and Swiss for roast beef and cheddar, turkey and gouda, or chicken and mozzarella for different flavors.
