Ham and Cheese Sliders
Description
These sliders use sweet Hawaiian rolls sliced horizontally to hold folded slices of deli ham and melting Swiss or cheddar cheese. The tops are brushed with a seasoned mixture of melted butter, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, poppy seeds, and dried minced onion, which adds tang, depth, and texture to the buttery glaze.
Baking the assembled sliders uncovered allows the cheese to melt thoroughly and the roll tops to turn lightly browned and crisp at the edges, contrasting with the soft, buttery interior. The flavor balance comes from the savory ham, creamy cheese, and the tangy, slightly sweet topping.
The recipe suggests using honey or black forest ham but allows any ham variety. Substitutions include onion powder or garlic powder if minced onion is unavailable, or everything bagel seasoning in place of poppy seeds and minced onion. Sliders can be stored up to 4 days refrigerated and freeze well for up to 6 months.
Ingredients
- 12 hawaiian rolls or dinner rolls or slider buns
- 12 lices ham see note, deli
- 8 ounces swiss cheese or cheddar cheese, sliced
- 6 tablespoons butter divided, melted
- 1 ½ teaspoons Dijon mustard or grainy mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon poppy seeds
- 1 teaspoon onion dried minced
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- In a small bowl combine 4 tablespoons melted butter, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, poppy seeds, and dried minced onion.
- Cut the rolls in half separating the top and bottom. If they are attached you don't need to separate each roll.
- Brush the inside of the rolls with the remaining 2 tablespoons butter.
- Place the bottom of the rolls in a baking dish. Layer a slice of folded ham on each roll and top with cheese slices.
- Place the top half of the rolls on the cheese and gently brush the butter mixture overtop.
- Bake uncovered for about 20 minutes or until the cheese has melted and the tops are lightly browned.
- Serve warm and enjoy.
Notes
- Use thinly sliced deli ham such as honey or black forest for sandwiches; adjust slice quantity for heartier sliders.
- If minced dried onion is unavailable, substitute with onion powder or garlic powder.
- Omit poppy seeds or replace both poppy seeds and onion with everything bagel seasoning for a different flavor.
- Leftover sliders keep in an airtight container refrigerated for up to 4 days, or freeze for up to 6 months.
