Ham and Cheese Sliders

Ham and Cheese Sliders use Hawaiian rolls layered with thinly sliced ham and Swiss cheese, topped with a butter mixture including Dijon mustard, poppy seeds, dried onion, and Worcestershire sauce, then baked until the cheese melts and the tops brown lightly. These sliders offer soft, flavorful bread with melted cheese and savory ham, finished with a seasoned buttery topping.

Description

Ham and Cheese Sliders start with a base of 12 Hawaiian-style rolls sliced horizontally but kept connected. Layers of thinly sliced deli ham and Swiss cheese are placed between the halves. The top buns are covered with a butter-based mixture containing Dijon mustard, poppy seeds, dried minced onion, and Worcestershire sauce, imparting a tangy and savory crust once baked.

Baked first covered to melt the cheese smoothly, then uncovered to brown the tops lightly, the sliders develop a golden, slightly crisp finish. The soft rolls provide a tender contrast to the cheese and ham, while the butter topping adds moisture and a flavorful crust.

These sliders serve well as a snack or appetizer, suitable for sharing at parties or casual meals. They can be cut easily into individual portions. Assembly up to 4 hours ahead and refrigeration helps preparation for gatherings.

Various ham types work for this recipe, with honey or smoked ham common choices, and cheese can be varied to suit taste preferences. The recipe yields 12 sliders, with typical servings being two per person.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 12 Hawaiian style rolls cut in half crosswise, do not separate the rolls
  • 3/4 lb ham thinly sliced, deli
  • 1/2 lb swiss cheese sliced
  • 6 tablespoons butter melted
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons poppy seeds
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons onion dried minced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon parsley chopped
  • cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Coat a sheet pan with cooking spray. Place the bottom half of the rolls on the pan.
  3. Layer the ham on top of the rolls, then layer the cheese over the ham.
  4. Place the tops of the rolls over the cheese.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the butter, mustard, poppy seeds, dried onion and Worcestershire sauce.
  6. Drizzle the butter mixture over the tops of the rolls.
  7. Cover the sandwiches with foil and bake for 15 minutes or until cheese is melted. Uncover the rolls and bake for an additional 3-5 minutes until the tops of the rolls are lightly browned.
  8. Sprinkle parsley over the top. Cut into individual sandwiches and serve immediately.

Notes

  • This recipe makes 12 sliders; most people eat about two each, so plan accordingly or increase the recipe for larger groups.
  • Thinly sliced deli ham varieties like honey or smoked ham work well, and Swiss cheese gives a classic flavor; other cheeses such as cheddar or provolone can be used.
  • Sliders can be assembled up to 4 hours prior and stored covered in the refrigerator until ready to bake.
