Ham Salad Pinwheels

Ham Salad Pinwheels are rolled tortillas filled with a finely chopped mix of cooked ham, hard-boiled egg, celery, onion, and a creamy dressing made of cream cheese, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, and sweet pickle relish. The mixture can be processed to the desired texture before spreading on tortillas and rolling tightly. Chilling the wrapped pinwheels before slicing allows the filling to firm up and the flavors to meld. This makes for savory, portable finger food ideal for snacks or appetizers.

Description

Ham Salad Pinwheels combine roughly chopped cooked ham and hard-boiled egg with crisp celery, diced red onion, cream cheese, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, sweet pickle relish, and black pepper. The ingredients are pulsed in a food processor to break down and combine, creating a spreadable filling that can vary from chunky to smooth depending on preference.

The filling is spread evenly on large tortillas, leaving a border, then rolled tightly into logs wrapped in plastic wrap to chill and set for several hours or overnight. When unwrapped and sliced, the pinwheels display their spiral layers. The mixture's creamy texture and savory flavor contrast with the soft tortillas, making these suitable for parties or lunchbox snacks.

These pinwheels keep well refrigerated for a few days but may cause the tortilla to soften over longer storage. Adjusting the relish sweetness or substituting dill varieties can modify the flavor profile. The rolling technique and chilling are key to maintaining structure when sliced.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 ounces ham roughly chopped, cooked
  • 1 large egg roughly chopped, hard-boiled
  • ½ cup celery thinly sliced
  • ½ cup red onion diced
  • ½ brick (4 oz) cream cheese softened
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon pickle relish sweet
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 large tortillas

Instructions

  1. Get out and measure your ingredients.
  2. Place the ham, egg, celery, red onion, cream cheese, mayonnaise, mustard, pickle relish, and pepper into a food processor.
  3. Pulse a few times to break up the ingredients and then scrape down the sides. Continue to pulse until everything is combined and well chopped up, you can leave this a little on the chunky or smooth side depending on your preference.
  4. Place a tortilla on a clean work surface. Spread ¼th of the ham salad mixture over the tortilla leaving a ½ inch border around the outside of the tortilla.
  5. Take the bottom of the tortilla and begin to roll it over itself to form a log. Try to roll it tightly but not so tight that the tortilla breaks.
  6. Take a large piece of plastic wrap and roll the log into the piece of plastic wrap tightly and tuck the ends under. Repeat with the remaining tortillas and filling.
  7. Place in the fridge for at least 4 hours or overnight is best. Discard the plastic wrap and cut them into about ½ inch slices.
  8. Serve as needed.

Notes

  • Store pinwheels in the refrigerator and use within three days to prevent sogginess in tortillas.
  • Use large burrito-sized tortillas for optimal size and structure.
  • Roll the tortillas as tightly as possible before wrapping to maintain shape when sliced.
  • If preferred, dill pickle relish or chopped pickles can replace sweet pickle relish for different taste.
