Hamburger Casserole

Hamburger Casserole combines ground beef, sautéed onions, garlic, and mushrooms with pasta shells, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and seasonings. Cheddar cheese is layered in, creating a hearty and cheesy baked dish. The casserole is topped with fresh chopped pickles, tomato, lettuce, and sesame seeds to add contrasting textures and fresh flavors reminiscent of a burger.

Description

This Hamburger Casserole blends typical burger components into a comforting layered baked dish. Shell pasta is cooked until al dente and mixed with a well-seasoned ground beef mixture that includes sautéed onions, garlic, mushrooms, and a tomato base spiced with Italian seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Cubed and shredded cheddar cheeses are incorporated and layered to provide melted, gooey cheese within the casserole.

After assembly, the casserole is baked to meld the flavors and create a warm, cheesy entree. The topping of fresh chopped pickles, tomato, iceberg lettuce, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds recalls classic burger garnishes, adding freshness and crunch to balance the rich and savory casserole components. This dish serves as a filling meal combining familiar burger taste with pasta comfort.

Using both cubed and shredded cheddar creates varied textures in the melting cheese layers. The combination of spices and Worcestershire sauce enhances the savory, umami flavor of the beef mixture, offering a balanced and rich profile.

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese cut into smaller cubes
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese grated

Toppings:

  • pickles chopped
  • tomato chopped, fresh
  • iceberg lettuce chopped
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Lightly grease a 9x13 baking dish and set it aside.
  3. Add water to a medium pot and season it with salt. Bring the water to a boil. Stir in the pasta and boil for about 8 minutes until tender.
  4. Transfer it to a colander, drain well, and return to the pot.
  5. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add olive oil. Once hot, add the diced onion, mushrooms, salt, and pepper. Stir and cook until the onions are tender. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Set aside.
  6. Next, add the beef to the skillet and cook until brown. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried parsley. Break it with a wooden spoon while cooking.
  7. Add Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, and Italian seasoning. Stir to combine.
  8. Transfer the beef mixture to the prepared casserole. Sprinkle one cup of cubed cheddar cheese on top.
  9. Add the sauteed mushrooms on top. Then, toss in the pasta shells and another 1 cup of shredded cheese. Toss to combine, and top with the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheese.
