Hamburger Gravy
Description
This dish begins by cooking ground beef in vegetable oil until browned, breaking it into small pieces. Excess grease is drained before sprinkling flour to cook slightly, removing any raw flour taste. The mixture is seasoned with salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper, infusing the gravy with layers of flavor.
Adding whole milk all at once, the mixture is stirred consistently to incorporate the flour and thicken the gravy to a creamy consistency that coats the back of a spoon. The method yields a hearty gravy with balanced seasoning and a rich texture that is comforting and versatile.
Hamburger Gravy can be served hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or bread. Adjust seasoning as preferred. Leftovers can be thinned with added milk when reheated to regain the original consistency, and cooking duration regulates thickness of the final gravy.
Ingredients
- 2 Tbs vegetable oil
- ½ lb ground beef
- ⅓ Cup all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¾ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 4 Cups whole milk
Instructions
- In a skillet, over medium heat, heat the oil until glistening.
- Tear the ground beef into small pieces and sprinkle into the warming skillet. Using a wooden spoon, break up the ground beef into smaller pieces as it cooks.
- When the ground beef is just past pink and turning brown, pour off any accumulated grease.
- Sprinkle the flour over the ground beef and allow to cook for 1-2 minutes. (this removes the flour taste from the dish).
- Add the salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder and cayenne and mix well.
- Pour the milk into the skillet all at once. Use your wooden spoon to scrape up any bits that have started to stick to the bottom of the skillet.
- Stir continuously until the milk thickens into a thick gravy that clings to the back of the wooden spoon.
Notes
- The amount of ground beef can be adjusted to preference, affecting meatiness in the gravy.
- Cook gravy to desired thickness, remembering it will thicken further on cooling.
- Reheat leftovers with added milk and whisk quickly to remove any lumps.
- Seasonings such as onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne, thyme, or oregano can be varied for personalized flavor.
- Use whole milk for creaminess; 2% milk can be used but results in a thinner gravy.
