Hamburger Gravy

Hamburger Gravy combines browned ground beef, onions, and garlic with a seasoned beef broth thickened with flour and enriched by half and half. This gravy, optionally enhanced with cream of mushroom soup and vegetables, is a comforting sauce perfect for serving over mashed potatoes, noodles, or biscuits. The mixture simmers to develop a rich, creamy texture and balanced savory flavor.

Description

This Hamburger Gravy recipe starts by browning ground beef with onions and garlic until softened and fragrant. Seasonings like Worcestershire sauce, onion and garlic powders, and black pepper add depth, while flour creates a roux base to thicken the sauce. Beef broth and half and half are gradually added, stirring to incorporate and build a creamy consistency. A beef bouillon cube further intensifies flavor.

The dish can be customized by stirring in optional cream of mushroom soup, sautéed mushrooms, or frozen mixed vegetables. Sautéing mushrooms separately helps concentrate their taste and maintain texture before adding them to the gravy. Additional vegetables can be added early to warm through. Served hot over mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or biscuits, this gravy is hearty and adaptable.

Leftovers store well refrigerated for up to three days or frozen for several months, making this gravy convenient for meal prep. Adjustments in liquid and ingredients allow for personal taste and texture preferences.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 Tablespoons flour
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • 1 beef bouillon cube or 1 tsp better than bouillon
  • ½ cup half and half

Optional Additions- See Notes

  • 10.5 oz cream of mushroom soup (10.5 oz.)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 8 oz. white button mushrooms sliced, rinsed, and patted dry
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables frozen

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef in a 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions halfway through and cook until softened, about 4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
  2. Add the Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, pepper, and flour. Stir to combine and cook for 1-2 minutes, until you can no longer smell flour.
  3. Add the beef broth, in small splashes and use a silicone spatula to "clean" the bottom and sides of the skillet. Add the half and half in the same manner, followed by the beef bouillon. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Let it bubble gently, it will continue to thicken and concentrate.
  4. Once near your desired level of thickness, serve over mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or with biscuits.
  5. See notes on optional ingredient additions such as vegetables or cream of mushroom soup.

Notes

  • For mushroom additions, sauté mushrooms separately to concentrate flavor before adding to gravy.
  • Frozen vegetables can be added when the beef broth is incorporated and heated through as the gravy thickens.
  • Hamburger gravy can be stored in the refrigerator up to 3 days or frozen up to 3 months for later use.
  • Adjust the amount of cream of mushroom soup or milk to modify the creaminess and thickness of the gravy.
  • Use half and half for a richer consistency, or substitute milk if preferred.
