Hamburger Stew

Hamburger Stew is a hearty meal combining browned ground beef, aromatic vegetables, and tender diced potatoes and carrots simmered in beef broth with tomato paste and seasoning. The stew develops a rich, savory flavor and a comforting texture, with optional peas adding a fresh touch. It’s a filling dish ideal for satisfying dinners and easy to customize with broth thickness and seasoning.

Description

This Hamburger Stew features ground beef cooked with onion, celery, and garlic before thickening with flour and tomato paste. Beef broth and Worcestershire sauce create a flavorful base, while potatoes and carrots simmer tender, absorbing the seasonings and broth. Italian seasoning adds a subtle herbaceous note. Frozen peas can be stirred in near the end for sweetness and color.

The stew is brought to a boil, then gently simmered with the lid slightly ajar to allow flavors to meld and broth to reduce to desired consistency. Adjust broth amount during cooking if the stew becomes too thick, or cook uncovered longer to thicken. Season with salt and black pepper to taste before serving.

Serve this stew warm as a main course, ideal for colder days and family meals. It pairs well with crusty bread or over rice for a filling meal. The recipe adapts easily with other vegetables or seasonings based on preference.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 3 ticks celery chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 pound ground beef lean
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
  • 4 cups beef broth + more if needed
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 russet potato peeled & diced
  • 4 medium carrot peeled & sliced
  • 1 cup peas optional, frozen
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Add the oil, onion, and celery to a soup pot and sauté over medium-high heat for 5-7 minutes.
  2. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  3. Add the beef to the pot and cook, breaking it up with your spoon as you go along, until it's browned (about 8 minutes).
  4. Sprinkle in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes (stirring often).
  5. Stir in the tomato paste.
  6. Add in the broth, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, potatoes, and carrots. Increase the heat to high and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat to a rapid simmer and cook, covered (with the lid slightly open), stirring occasionally, for at least 30 minutes or until the potatoes and carrots are tender and the flavors have had some time to build. Add more broth if the stew starts to get too thick, and if you want it thicker, cook it for longer with the lid off.
  7. Stir in the frozen peas and season with salt & pepper as needed.
