Description

Hamburger Stroganoff begins by sautéing minced onion and garlic in butter until translucent and fragrant, then browning ground beef in the skillet. Flour, salt, and pepper are added along with mushrooms, and the mixture simmers briefly to meld the flavors and thicken slightly. Cream of chicken soup is stirred in and simmered to develop a creamy base.

After cooking, sour cream is added off the heat to combine smoothly without curdling, enhancing richness and adding a slight tang. This creates a smooth, creamy sauce coating the beef and mushrooms. The texture contrasts tender mushrooms with soft ground meat in a thick sauce.

This stroganoff is traditionally served over egg noodles, which absorb the flavorful sauce well, though rice is an alternative. It functions as a satisfying main course with familiar comfort food ingredients, offering warmth and fullness.

  • ½ cup onion minced
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 Tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 ounces mushrooms optional or fresh, canned, sliced
  • 10.5 ounces cream of chicken soup or cream of mushroom, canned
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup butter
  • egg noodles for serving, or rice

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet sauté onion in butter over medium-high heat until translucent. Add in minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute or until fragrant. Stir in meat and brown.
  2. Add ground beef to skillet and cook until browned.
  3. Stir in flour, salt, pepper & mushrooms in ground beef mixture. Simmer on low five minutes, drain off grease.
  4. Add soup to skillet and simmer, uncovered 10 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in sour cream. Stir to completely combine.
  6. Serve over noodles or rice. I always use egg noodles. Garnish with parsley if desired.
