Hawaiian Baked Beans
Description
This recipe combines multiple cans of great northern beans with diced cooked ham, chopped onion, crushed pineapple and pineapple tidbits, along with ketchup, prepared mustard, cider vinegar, and brown sugar in a mixing bowl. After mixing thoroughly, the mixture is poured into a baking dish, covered with foil, and baked at a moderate temperature for 90 minutes. The foil is then removed for an additional 15-20 minutes of baking to thicken the sauce and slightly caramelize the top. The combination of sweet pineapple and brown sugar with tangy mustard and vinegar creates a distinctively sweet-savory flavor profile characteristic of Hawaiian baked beans. The cooked ham adds a smoky, meaty element that enriches the dish. These beans are traditionally served at gatherings, complementing grilled meats or comfort foods.
