Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp
Description
This Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp recipe begins by cleaning, de-veining, and drying jumbo shrimp. The shrimp are then thoroughly coated in a blend of all-purpose flour, cornstarch, cayenne pepper, paprika, and salt to provide a flavorful and crispy coating when cooked. The shrimp are pan-fried in olive oil until opaque and crispy on each side.
Separately, garlic is cooked in butter until golden and crisp, yielding a rich and fragrant garlic butter. This mixture is then combined back into the pan with the shrimp, allowing the shrimp to absorb the garlic butter flavors. A small amount of lemon juice may be added to brighten the dish. The resulting texture contrasts crispy coated shrimp with tender seafood inside, alongside deeply savory and aromatic garlic butter sauce with subtle heat from cayenne and paprika.
This dish is often served as a main or appetizer, highlighting its bold garlic profiles and satisfying textures. The straightforward method focuses on balancing the spice and crispness with buttery, garlicky richness.
Ingredients
- 24 pieces Shrimp 15-20 size, jumbo
- 15 g all-purpose flour
- 17 g cornstarch
- 2 g cayenne pepper
- 14 g paprika
- 6 g salt
- 170 g garlic chopped
- 228 g butter unsalted
- 2 fl oz olive oil add more if necessary
- ½ fl oz lemon juice add more if necessary
Instructions
- Prep your shrimp by cleaning them under running water and removing the heads. De-vein them by slicing ⅛ of an inch on the outside of the shrimp from the tail to the top of the head. Remove the poop vein. Keep the shells on and dry the shrimp with paper towels. See my full shrimp deveining tutorial here.
- Mix the flour, cornstarch, cayenne, paprika, and salt together. Coat each shrimp thoroughly including the slit that you just cut.
- Place on a wire rack and set it aside until it’s time to cook.
- In a pan over medium heat, add the butter until it melts then add the garlic.
- Cook until the garlic is crispy and golden, about 3 minutes. Here's what the garlic should look like when it's done. Transfer the garlic butter to a new bowl.
- In the same pan, add the olive oil and cook the shrimp until crispy on both sides, about 1 minute per side or until the meat is opaque.
- Add the garlic butter back into the pan with the shrimp and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Drizzle the lemon juice on top and taste.
- Serve with a side of white rice, additional lemon wedges, and Hawaiian mac salad.
