Hawaiian Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey
  • 6 ounces Bacon center cut
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper diced
  • 2 teaspoons garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger minced
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon liquid smoke hickory-flavored
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • cup pineapple juice
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • pineapple optional, rings
  • red onion optional, rings

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the bacon until crisp. Transfer it to a paper towel-lined plate.
  2. Returning the to same skillet, add the ground beef, onion, and bell pepper. Cook until brown and cooked through.
  3. Whisk the ketchup, pineapple juice, brown sugar, vinegar, liquid smoke, and soy sauce in a small bowl. Stir the sauce into the meat mixture. Bring the mixture to a simmer and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 5 minutes until the sauce starts to thicken.
  4. Crumble the bacon and stir it into the meat mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Serve on Hawaiian rolls or hamburger buns. Garnish with pineapple rings and red onions, if desired.
