Healthy BBQ Sauce
Description
The Healthy BBQ Sauce combines finely diced onion sautéed in olive oil with passata, tomato puree, crushed garlic, honey, black pepper, paprika, balsamic vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmering these ingredients synthesizes their flavors into a cohesive sauce that can be left chunky or blended smooth post-cooling depending on preference. The paprika contributes a subtle smoky note while the honey adds gentle sweetness, balanced by the acidity of the balsamic vinegar.
This sauce pairs well with grilled meats, vegetables, or as a flavorful addition to sandwiches. It suits various dishes that benefit from a tangy, slightly sweet, and lightly smoky barbecue condiment.
Variations include using maple syrup to keep it vegan, adding spice with cayenne or chili sauce, blending for smoothness or skipping blending for a chunkier texture, and enhancing smokiness or flavor complexity with liquid smoke, English mustard, or bourbon. Season to taste with salt if desired.
Ingredients
- 0.5 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 onion small; very finely diced
- 500 g passata
- 2 garlic crushed, clove
- 4 tablespoon tomato puree
- 2 tablespoon honey
- 1 pinch black pepper ground
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 3 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Add 0.5 tablespoon Olive oil to a pan and put 1 Onion in and gently cook for 3-4 minutes until softened.
- Add 500 g Passata, 2 Garlic clove, 4 tablespoon Tomato puree, 2 tablespoon Honey, 1 pinch Ground black pepper, 1 tablespoon Paprika, 3 tablespoon Balsamic vinegar and 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. Stir well.
- Simmer for around 10 minutes.
- If you want a smooth sauce, wait for it to cool and then blend to the desired consistency.
Notes
- Use maple syrup instead of honey to make the sauce vegan.
- Add cayenne or chili sauce for a spicier BBQ sauce variation.
- Blend the sauce after cooling for a smooth texture or leave chunky if preferred.
- Enhance smokiness with smoked paprika or liquid smoke, and add a teaspoon of English mustard for extra flavor.
- For an adult twist, stir in a splash of bourbon and simmer longer to incorporate the flavor.
- Season with salt as needed if not serving to children.
