Healthy Ham and Cheese Quiche

This quiche combines diced ham, sautéed onions, and a blend of cheddar and mozzarella cheeses in a frozen deep-dish pie crust. The custard filling is enriched with eggs, milk, garlic, and Italian seasoning, producing a savory, tender slice with a firm edge and slightly soft center. Fresh herbs add brightness, making it suitable for brunch, lunch, or a light dinner.

Description

The Healthy Ham and Cheese Quiche features a frozen deep-dish crust filled with a mixture of ham, cheeses, sautéed onions, and a seasoned egg custard. The custard uses a combination of whole eggs, egg whites, milk, and seasonings including garlic and Italian herbs. Baking at 375°F until the filling is set around the edges creates a firm but slightly jiggly center, providing a pleasant texture contrast. Fresh herbs incorporated into and highlighted on top of the quiche give it a fresh note.

Served warm or at room temperature, this quiche pairs well with light salads or steamed vegetables for a balanced meal. It is also convenient for using leftover ham and adaptable to many herbs and milk types to suit preferences or dietary needs.

To prevent the frozen pie crust from breaking, transfer it directly from the freezer to the pie dish. Milk types can vary; evaporated milk or whole milk produce creamier results, while fat-free milk may need some heavy cream added to enrich the custard. Fresh herbs enhance the flavor but can be omitted or replaced with dried spices. For gluten-free needs, a suitable pie crust substitute can be used.

Notes

  • Transfer the frozen pie crust directly to the pie dish to avoid breakage during handling.
  • Any type of milk can be used, but evaporated or whole milk keeps the custard creamy; consider adding heavy cream if using fat-free milk.
  • Fresh herbs add flavor but can be omitted or replaced with dried spices as preferred.
  • Use any deep-dish pie crust, store bought or homemade; gluten-free crusts can be substituted to make the quiche gluten-free.
