Heirloom Tomato Salad with Burrata
Description
Heirloom Tomato Salad with Burrata showcases a variety of tomatoes, both sliced heirloom and halved cherry tomatoes, arranged with thinly sliced red onion, minced garlic, and fresh basil for a fresh and aromatic base. The burrata cheese is torn into pieces and placed atop, adding a creamy, luscious texture that contrasts with the juicy tomatoes.
The dressing of extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar is drizzled over the salad and seasoned with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. This simple dressing enhances the tomatoes and cheese without overpowering them. The dish is served immediately to preserve the texture and freshness of the ingredients.
Variations can include substituting the red wine vinegar with lemon juice or balsamic vinegar, and experimenting with different fresh herbs like dill or mint. Other cheeses such as feta or goat cheese can replace burrata if desired. Adding sliced cucumbers is also a popular complement that harmonizes with the tomatoes.
Ingredients
- 4 heirloom tomato anywhere from 1-2 pounds, medium
- 1 cup cherry tomato halved, multicolored
- 1/2 red onion thinly sliced, medium
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 20-25 basil small fresh leaves
- 8 ounces burrata cheese fresh, ball
Dressing
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt to taste, coarse
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
Instructions
- Wash and slice the heirloom tomatoes into wedges. Arrange them in a shallow layer on a serving platter. Slice the smaller cherry tomatoes in half and sprinkle them around the heirloom tomatoes.
- Sprinkle the thinly sliced red onion, minced garlic, and basil leaves over the tomatoes.
- Tear or cut the burrata with a serrated knife into pieces and arrange them around the top of the tomatoes.
- Drizzle everything with the olive oil and vinegar, then season with the salt and pepper. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Red wine vinegar can be substituted with lemon juice or balsamic vinegar for different acidic notes.
- Additional seasoning with Italian herb blends can enhance the salad but is optional to let tomato flavor stand out.
- Alternative herbs such as dill, thyme, or mint work well instead of basil.
- Burrata can be swapped for feta, goat cheese, or fresh mozzarella balls for variety.
- Incorporate sliced cucumbers for an extra fresh element that pairs well with tomatoes.
