Hibiscus Tea Recipe
Description
Hibiscus Tea Recipe involves simmering dried hibiscus flowers, also called flor de Jamaica, in water until softened, then straining to obtain a rich, ruby-colored liquid. Sugar is stirred in while hot to dissolve fully. The concentrate is then diluted with additional cold water to make a total of 12 cups. Optionally, it is served over ice with lime wedges for a fresh citrus note.
The resulting tea is lightly sweet, with a tart and slightly floral flavor profile characteristic of hibiscus. The slow simmer concentrates flavor and color while mellowing harsh edges. Serving chilled over ice enhances its refreshing quality and balances sweetness and acidity.
This tea is popular in Mexican and other international cuisines as a natural, chilled beverage. It provides an attractive, flavorful alternative to sodas or other sweetened drinks, suitable for gatherings or daily hydration.
The notes recommend adjusting sweetness according to taste, and suggest honey as an alternative sweetener. Store the tea covered in the refrigerator for up to one week to maintain freshness.
Ingredients
- 12 cups water divided
- 1 1/2 cups dried hibiscus flowers (flor de Jamaica, about 2 1/2 ounces, see note 1)
- 1 cup granulated sugar or to taste (see note 2)
- ice and lime wedges, for serving, optional
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine 4 cups water and 1 1/2 cups dried hibiscus flowers. Bring to boil, reduce heat, and simmer until the dried flowers have softened, about 15 minutes.
- Strain through a fine-mesh sieve to remove dried flowers, pressing down on them to extract as much liquid as possible (you will have about 3 cups liquid).
- Stir in sugar until dissolved. Transfer to a large pitcher and stir in remaining 8 cups cold water. Serve over ice with lime wedges if desired.
Notes
- Measure dried hibiscus flowers by weight (about 2 1/2 ounces) or use 1 1/2 cups by volume for accuracy.
- Adjust sugar quantity to suit your preferred sweetness level; honey can be used instead if preferred.
- Store brewed hibiscus tea covered in the refrigerator and consume within one week for best quality.
