Hojicha Roasted Green Tea

Hojicha Roasted Green Tea is made by sifting roasted hojicha powder into hot water, then whisking it until foamy, creating a smooth, aromatic tea base. It can be served simply as tea or with steamed milk for a creamy latte, sweetened optionally to taste. The roasting imparts a toasty flavor unique to hojicha, creating a comforting, mild green tea experience.

Description

The preparation starts by sifting roasted hojicha green tea powder into a tea bowl to remove clumps. Hot water is added and whisked using either a traditional chasen or an electric frother in a zigzag motion until the tea becomes light and foamy on the surface. Additional hot water or steamed milk can then be added depending on preference — with milk making a latte version.

This results in a warm, lightly roasted green tea characterized by a mild, smooth flavor, less astringent than other green teas due to the roasting process. Sweeteners like honey, sugar, maple syrup, or agave may be added according to taste.

The tea’s strength can be adjusted by varying the amount of hojicha powder, making it adaptable from newcomers to aficionados.

Ingredients

Servings
  • ½ teaspoon hojicha green tea powder sifted, roasted
  • ¼ C water hot
  • ¼ C water or steamed milk of your choice, for a latte
  • 1-2 teaspoon sweetener optional, to your taste, including honey, sugar, maple syrup, agave syrup, etc

Instructions

  1. Use a chashaku (bamboo tea scoop) to add the hojicha powder to sieve placed over a chawan (tea bowl).
  2. Sift the hojicha into a chawan (tea bowl) to remove any clumps.
  3. Pour about ¼ C hot water into the chawan (tea bowl) and gently press the chasen (whisk) against the bottom of the bowl.
  4. Move the chasen in a zig zag motion until the liquid becomes foamy.
  5. Or use an electric whisk/frother to froth it up.
  6. Add remaining hot water, or steamed milk of your choice.
  7. Sweeten with honey, sugar, maple syrup, or sweetener of your choice, to your taste.

Notes

  • Adjust hojicha powder amount to suit your preferred tea strength, starting lighter if new to hojicha.
  • Roasting provides a milder, less bitter flavor compared to non-roasted green teas.
  • Sweeten with honey, sugar, or syrup to enhance taste if desired.
