Homemade Alfredo Sauce

Homemade Alfredo Sauce is a creamy mixture of melted salted butter, heavy cream, and freshly grated Parmesan cheese whisked together over gentle heat. Seasoned with salt and black pepper, it creates a smooth, rich sauce that clings to pasta for a classic Italian-inspired dish.

Description

This Alfredo sauce starts with melting salted butter in a heavy skillet over medium heat, followed by adding heavy cream to form the base. As the cream blends with butter, freshly grated Parmesan cheese is whisked in until melted, producing a smooth and creamy sauce. The seasoning is adjusted with salt and plenty of black pepper to taste.

The sauce is best served immediately over hot pasta to maintain its creamy consistency. If the sauce thickens upon standing, adding a splash of pasta cooking water helps loosen it for easy tossing.

This simple sauce highlights the fresh Parmesan flavor and creamy texture without added ingredients or thickening agents. It's a straightforward way to enrich pasta dishes with richness and savor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup butter salted
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 cups Parmesan Cheese (use the real stuff if you can)
  • salt to taste
  • ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a heavy-bottomed deep skillet over medium heat. Once butter is completely melted, reduce heat to medium-low.
  2. Immediately pour in the cream. Pan may sizzle, but as you stir it will subside.
  3. Whisk in the freshly grated cheese and continue stirring until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth. Taste and add salt and lots of pepper, as desired.
  4. Use sauce immediately by tossing it with hot pasta and serving right away. If it sits, the sauce tends to thicken up, so add in a splash of pasta water to keep things loose.
