Homemade Alfredo Sauce Recipe

Homemade Alfredo Sauce blends butter, heavy cream, cream cheese, garlic, and Parmesan cheese into a rich and creamy sauce. Lightly seasoned with salt, pepper, and optional Italian herbs and nutmeg, it creates a smooth texture ideal for pasta. The inclusion of cream cheese adds extra creaminess and thickness, delivering a luscious sauce that can be prepared gently on the stovetop and served immediately.

Description

This Alfredo Sauce starts by melting butter with heavy cream and optionally cream cheese in a skillet over medium-low heat until the mixture lightly simmers. Minced garlic and Italian seasoning are whisked in along with salt and pepper to infuse aromatic flavors. Then freshly grated Parmesan cheese is slowly added while whisking until it melts into a creamy consistency.

The result is a thick, silky sauce flavored by the sharpness of Parmesan and the subtle seasoning from garlic and herbs. A small amount of nutmeg can be sprinkled in just before serving to add a hint of warmth and complexity.

This sauce is designed to be served immediately with pasta. Its smooth, rich texture coats noodles well, making a comforting meal base.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 ounces cream cheese optional - it makes the sauce creamier
  • 1/2 teaspoons garlic minced, fresh
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups Parmesan Cheese freshly grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg optional

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium-low heat, add butter, heavy whipping cream, and cream cheese (if using). Stir over medium-low heat for about 2 minutes until melted, and it starts to lightly simmer.
  2. Next, whisk in the minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper for one minute. Note: For extra garlicky flavor, first melt the butter, add the garlic, cook for 1 minute, and then add the ingredients from step 1.
  3. Reduce heat to low, add the shredded Parmesan cheese, and continue to whisk until melted.
  4. You can serve immediately with your favorite pasta.
  5. For a very subtle nutty flavor, sprinkle some nutmeg on top before serving.
