Homemade Applesauce
Description
This Homemade Applesauce recipe uses peeled, cored, and chopped apples cooked gently with a bit of water, sugar to taste, and cinnamon until very tender. After cooking, you can mash for a rustic chunky texture or puree for a smooth consistency using an immersion blender or food processor. The final texture and sweetness are adjustable based on your apples and personal preference.
The natural sweetness of the apples varies, so you may want to add between two to four tablespoons of sugar or none at all if using sweeter varieties. Cinnamon adds warmth and spice that complements the fruitiness.
Serve the applesauce warm as a side or chilled as a snack or dessert. It keeps well refrigerated for about a week and can be frozen for up to four months. When blending warm applesauce, keep lids loose to allow steam to escape and add liquid gradually for desired smoothness. Reheat gently before serving if chilled.
Ingredients
- 3 pounds apple peeled, cored, and chopped, about 6 medium
- ⅓ cup water
- 2 to 4 tablespoons granulated sugar or to taste
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a low simmer and cover.
- Cook 15-20 minutes or until apples are very tender. Remove lid and simmer an additional 5 minutes to thicken.

Notes
- Taste the apples before adding sugar; adjust sweetness from 2 to 4 tablespoons based on apple tartness.
- You can mash apples with a potato masher for chunky texture or blend smooth with an immersion blender or regular blender.

- Store applesauce in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 4 months.
- Reheat thawed applesauce gently before serving.
