Homemade Au Gratin Potatoes

Homemade Au Gratin Potatoes are thinly sliced Yukon gold potatoes baked in a creamy mixture of heavy cream and milk, seasoned with garlic, salt, and pepper, and layered with grated Gruyere cheese. The result is tender potatoes surrounded by a smooth, golden cheese sauce and a slightly crisp, browned top.

Description

This classic Au Gratin Potatoes recipe involves slicing peeled potatoes thinly and layering them in a dish rubbed with garlic and butter. The potatoes are covered with a warm cream and milk mixture seasoned and sprinkled liberally with Gruyere cheese before baking at 375°F until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender.

The Gruyere adds a nutty, slightly sharp flavor that complements the rich creaminess, while the garlic rubbed on the baking dish imparts subtle depth. The layered construction ensures even cooking and a soft, silky texture inside with a lightly crisp crust on top.

This dish serves well as a comforting side for roasted meats, poultry, or vegetables, offering a satisfying combination of creamy, cheesy, and tender potato bites.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 7 large potato peeled and sliced thin, Yukon gold variety
  • 1 clove garlic cut in half
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream
  • ½ cup milk
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • 4 ounces gruyere cheese grated

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Peel and slice the potatoes. Place the slices of potatoes in a bowl filled with cold water as you cut them so they don't turn brown.
  2. Rub the two halves of garlic on the sides and bottom of a 2.5 liter or 3-quart casserole dish. Spread butter along the sides and bottom of the dish.
  3. Heat the heavy cream and milk on medium heat until it comes to a simmer.
  4. Drain the water from the sliced potatoes. Layer half of the sliced potatoes on the bottom of the dish and top with salt and pepper.
  5. Pour half of the heated cream mixture over the potatoes, and sprinkle half of the cheese, then repeat all the layers again.
  6. Bake until potatoes are soft and golden brown on top, about 50 to 55 minutes.
