Homemade Baked Meatballs
Description
The recipe blends equal parts lean ground beef and pork with Italian seasoned breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, freshly ground black pepper, eggs, and ketchup to bind and flavor the mixture. Formed into tablespoon-sized balls and placed on a parchment-lined baking sheet, they bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes until fully cooked. Baking rather than frying or pan-searing makes preparation simpler and reduces added fat. The even cooking inside maintains a moist center with a lightly browned exterior. These meatballs can be served alongside sauces or used in sandwiches and casseroles.
After baking, leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to four days, with microwave reheating suggested for convenience. They are also freezer-friendly, with the option to freeze unbaked meatballs for up to six months before cooking or freeze cooked meatballs to reheat later. Freezing unbaked meatballs preserves texture better.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef lean
- 1 pound ground pork
- 1 cup Italian seasoned breadcrumbs
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon oregano
- black pepper to taste, freshly ground
- 2 egg
- 1/4 cup ketchup
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients. Do not overmix!
- Scoop out a tablespoon of the mixture and form a ball in your hands. Place meatballs on a parchment lined baking sheet. Repeat for all the meat.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the internal temperature is 145 degrees.
Notes
- Store leftover cooked meatballs in an airtight, microwave-safe container in the fridge for up to four days.
- For freezing, form meatballs first then freeze unbaked for up to six months before baking for best freshness.
- You can also freeze cooked meatballs, but they are freshest when eaten immediately after baking.
