Homemade Balsamic Glaze

Homemade Balsamic Glaze is a simple reduction of balsamic vinegar and brown sugar simmered until syrupy. This glaze adds a sweet and tangy finish to dishes, enhancing flavors with its thick, glossy texture. It's versatile for drizzling over vegetables, meats, salads, or desserts, giving an easy way to add a concentrated balsamic flavor without added ingredients.

Description

This recipe uses just two ingredients: balsamic vinegar and brown sugar. The mixture is heated in a small saucepan, first to dissolve the sugar and then simmered to reduce volume by half, thickening the liquid to a syrup consistency. Watching the bubbles helps indicate its readiness as the glaze becomes sticky and glossy. Cooling further thickens the glaze, making it easy to drizzle or spread over foods.

The simplicity of this glaze allows it to customize dishes with a blend of acidity and sweetness. It can be gently reheated and thinned if too thick by adding a little water. Stored refrigerated, it remains usable for several weeks.

This glaze works well as a finishing touch on roasted vegetables, grilled meats, salads, or even fruit and desserts. Its rich texture and concentrated flavor add depth without overpowering other ingredients.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup balsamic vinegar $2.16
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar $0.16

Instructions

  1. Add the balsamic vinegar and brown sugar to a small saucepot. Stir to dissolve the sugar.
  2. Bring the mixture up to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low, then continue to simmer the mixture, stirring often, until it has reduced in volume by about half. This should take around ten minutes, but the total time can vary depending on your cookware, the burner, and batch size. You'll know it's done when the vinegar has thickened to the point where the simmering bubbles linger on the surface instead of immediately popping.
  3. Remove the glaze from the heat and allow it to cool. It will thicken considerably more as it cools. If it isn't to your desired thickness, you can simmer the glaze again to reduce it further. If the glaze is too thick, you can thin it with a small splash of water.
  4. Once cool, drizzle the glaze over your favorite foods and enjoy! Refrigerate leftovers until ready to use, or up to three weeks.
