Homemade Balsamic Glaze Recipe
Description
The recipe combines balsamic vinegar with honey or another sweetener such as maple syrup or brown sugar. Heating the mixture gently on medium heat, then reducing to a simmer, concentrates the flavors as the liquid evaporates. The glaze thickens to coat the back of a spoon, achieving a syrupy texture without boiling.
The final glaze cools to room temperature before use, ensuring a glossy finish and fluid consistency. Because it is a simple mixture of vinegar and sweetener, it adds a bright, rich dimension to foods without extra additives.
Storing the glaze in an airtight glass jar or bottle in the refrigerator keeps it fresh for up to two weeks, allowing repeated use as a versatile condiment or finishing touch in cooking.
Ingredients
- 1/2 /2 cup balsamic vinegar
- 3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup or brown sugar
Instructions
- Heat the balsamic vinegar and sweetener. Add the balsamic vinegar and honey (or sweetener of choice) to a small non-reactive pot set on a cooktop over medium heat.
- Simmer. Once it begins to bubble (but not boil!), reduce the heat and let it simmer until it has reduced by half and easily coats the back of a spoon, about 10 minutes.
- Cool the balsamic glaze. Remove it from the heat and allow it to cool before serving.
Notes
- Use a non-reactive pot to avoid discoloration or off-flavors during simmering.
- Simmer gently without boiling to achieve proper thickness and maintain flavor balance.
- Store cooled glaze in an airtight glass container refrigerated up to two weeks.
