Homemade BBQ Sauce

This Homemade BBQ Sauce mixes tomato sauce, molasses, vinegar, and spices into a rich and tangy condiment with a slightly smoky undertone. The balance of sweet brown sugar and apple cider vinegar produces a classic American BBQ flavor that complements grilled or roasted meats well. Adjusting the cayenne or adding sriracha can customize the sauce's heat level.

Description

The Homemade BBQ Sauce recipe brings together tomato sauce and paste as the base, enhanced by apple cider vinegar's acidity and sweeteners like brown sugar and molasses. Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce add depth, while smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and fresh black pepper build the sauce's flavor profile with smoky, savory, and mildly spicy notes. Gently simmering the combined ingredients softens the spices and melds the flavors.

Its thick texture makes it a good dipping or basting sauce for grilled foods. Those looking for a spicier version can increase the cayenne pepper amount or include sriracha to intensify heat.

The recipe notes clarify ingredient choices like using tomato sauce equivalent to passata and recommend light, unsulfured molasses rather than blackstrap for better flavor balance.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 oz. tomato sauce $0.56
  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste $0.18
  • 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar $0.07
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar $0.06
  • 2 Tbsp molasses $0.36
  • 1/2 Tbsp Dijon mustard $0.02
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce $0.02
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika $0.10
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder $0.02
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder $0.02
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper $0.01
  • black pepper $0.02, freshly cracked, about 10 cranks of a pepper mill
  • salt $0.02, to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine all of the ingredients except the salt in a small sauce pan. Stir and heat over medium heat, allowing it to come up to a slight simmer.
  2. Let the sauce cook and simmer lightly, stirring often, for five minutes. Taste the sauce and add salt if needed (I did not add any).

Notes

  • Use tomato sauce similar to passata with a mild seasoned base for best results.
  • Light, unsulfured molasses is preferred over blackstrap for a richer, balanced flavor.
  • For a spicier sauce, increase cayenne pepper or add sriracha.
