Homemade Bourbon Vanilla Extract

This homemade vanilla extract uses bourbon and whole vanilla beans to infuse a rich, aromatic extract over several weeks. The vanilla beans' seeds and pods steep in bourbon in small bottles, releasing their distinctive sweet and floral flavors. The result is a deeply flavored extract that enhances baking and desserts.

Description

The Homemade Bourbon Vanilla Extract recipe calls for quality bourbon and Madagascar vanilla beans split to expose their seeds. The beans are cut into shorter segments and placed into small bottles filled with bourbon. Shaking the bottles distributes the beans and allows the bourbon to absorb the vanilla essence evenly.

Allowing the mixture to sit for at least four weeks develops a deeply fragrant, intense vanilla extract. Frequent shaking helps extract the flavors more fully. This slow infusion method yields a product that delivers a true vanilla taste to baked goods, custards, and more, without the artificial notes of commercial extracts.

This process produces twelve small bottles of extract, making it suitable for gifting, sharing, or long-term kitchen use. The control over bean quality and bourbon type allows customization of the final flavor profile.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 750 ml bourbon
  • 6 vanilla bean soft, Madagascar

Instructions

  1. Pour the bourbon evenly into twelve 2-2.5 ounce bottles.
  2. Cut a long slit down the length of each vanilla bean, so they open exposing the seeds. Then cut each bean in half, to create twelve short pieces.
  3. Place one vanilla bean segment in each bottle. Close the bottles tightly. Then shake vigorously.
  4. Allow the bottle to sit at least 4 weeks, before gifting or using them. Every few days give them a vigorous shake.

Notes

  • Use high-quality bourbon and fresh Madagascar vanilla beans for best flavor.
  • The extract improves with time; at least four weeks of infusion is necessary before using.
  • Shake the bottles every few days to enhance flavor extraction.
  • This recipe yields twelve small bottles that are convenient for gifting or personal use.
