Homemade Buffalo Sauce Recipe
Description
This Buffalo Sauce starts by gently melting butter over low heat, which forms the base of the sauce, contributing a rich and creamy mouthfeel. Adding hot sauce, apple cider or white vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, granulated garlic, salt, and black pepper creates a layered flavor profile balancing heat, acidity, and savoriness. The use of Hungarian paprika adds a smoky note, while optional ghost pepper flakes bring an additional spicy kick for those preferring more heat.
The sauce is whisked until smooth and then cooled before storing in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It can be prepared ahead of time and used as needed to coat chicken wings, vegetables, or other dishes requiring a classic Buffalo flavor with moderate heat and tang.
This sauce is noted to produce about a cup and a bit more, suitable for multiple servings. The medium heat level makes it approachable for many who enjoy mildly spicy, tangy sauces.
Ingredients
- 1 butter 1/2 cup, or 8 tablespoons, stick
- ½ cup hot sauce Franks is very popular, though I use Valentina HOT, louisiana style
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar or white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon paprika I use Hungarian paprika – smoked is great, too
- ½ teaspoon granulated garlic or more to taste
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- ghost pepper flakes optional, or cayenne flakes; add Tabasco sauce for extra tang
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a small pot over low heat. Add the remaining ingredients and whisk them together until nice and smooth.
- Cool, then transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate.
- Use as needed!
Notes
- This recipe yields about 1 cup of sauce, suitable for coating wings or other dishes.
- The heat level is medium and can be adjusted with ghost pepper flakes or cayenne for more intensity.
- Using Hungarian paprika adds a subtle smokiness; smoked paprika is a good alternative.
- Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator and stir before use.
