Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing

This Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing blends buttermilk, sour cream, mayonnaise, fresh garlic, green onions, dill, and a hint of cumin and chili powder for a tangy, herby flavor. The dressing is creamy and thickens if you add more sour cream, making it versatile for salads or as a vegetable dip. It’s designed to develop flavor after chilling, keeping well in the fridge for up to a week.

Description

The Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing combines buttermilk and sour cream with mayonnaise for a creamy base, enhanced with fresh garlic, green onions, and fresh dill. Fresh lemon juice adds brightness while ground cumin and chili powder offer subtle warmth and complexity. Whisking these ingredients together yields a smooth dressing that can be thicker with additional sour cream, suitable for dips or salads.

This dressing gains depth of flavor when chilled for several hours or overnight, allowing ingredients to meld. Its tangy and slightly spiced profile complements fresh greens or raw vegetables effectively.

It can be prepared a day ahead and stored covered in the refrigerator for up to a week, providing convenience for meal prep or entertaining in larger quantities by doubling the recipe.

Ingredients

Servings
  • ½ c. buttermilk
  • ½ c. sour cream
  • ¼ c. mayonnaise
  • 2 tsp. lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 2 garlic minced, medium-sized cloves
  • ¾ tsp. kosher salt
  • tsp. black pepper
  • 2 green onions finely minced
  • 2 tsp. dill minced fresh
  • tsp. cumin
  • tsp. chili powder

Instructions

  1. Combine all dressing ingredients in a small-ish bowl or a quart jar with lid, and whisk well. If you like a thicker dressing (for using as a vegetable dip, for example), add a bit more sour cream. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Cover and chill until ready to serve. This can be prepared a day in advance, and actually helps to better marry the flavors. Keeps well in the refrigerator for up to a week. Serve with fresh greens or as a dip for raw vegetables.
  2. We most often double this recipe. This works well for entertaining or for having enough to enjoy a few salads during the week.

Notes

  • Adjust thickness by adding more sour cream for a dip consistency.
  • Chill dressing before serving to allow flavors to develop fully.
  • Store covered in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • Doubling the recipe is convenient for entertaining or weekly salads.
